The layout
O'Hare's modernisation turned a tangle of crossing runways into a mostly parallel system: six east–west runways in two groups, 9L/27R, 9C/27C and 9R/27L to the north and 10L/28R, 10C/28C and 10R/28L to the south, plus two diagonals, 4L/22R and 4R/22L. The terminal core sits in the middle, Terminals 1, 2 and 3 in a ring with Terminal 5, the international terminal, off to the east. Terminal 1 is United's, with the famous neon-lit tunnel between its concourses; American lives in Terminal 3.
The layout means arrivals and departures can run on several parallel runways at once, which is what lets O'Hare handle more than two thousand movements on a busy day.
