The layout
Suvarnabhumi opened in 2006 on a former marsh east of Bangkok known as Cobra Swamp, and everything about it is large. The terminal, under its sweeping wave-form roof, was among the biggest single buildings in the world when it opened, with concourses A through G radiating from it; the SAT-1 satellite terminal, opened in 2023, is linked to it by an automated people mover. The runways run roughly north–south: two parallel runways flanked the terminal from the start, and a third, to the west, opened in late 2024.
The name, pronounced 'su-wan-na-poom', means 'golden land'.
